Chapter 23

Savage pulled up halfway down the road to assess the situation. He could clearly see Carl Cooper being filmed by a couple of his thugs on mobile phones. Savage couldn’t hear him but he could see him ranting away, gesticulating wildly. Another one of his little films to post on his many social-media sites, no doubt, about how he was ridding the streets of paedophiles, not caring whether the people he was targeting were innocent or not.

The men around him were in a frenzied state. Excitable and full of adrenaline, they shuffled on their feet, unable to keep still, as if they’d had too much caffeine and Haribo. Faces pinched, eyes wide and alert. Chanting mindlessly.

“We need to get out of here,” said Tannaz. “Come back when they’re gone. Lost interest.”

Savage knew people like this never lost interest. They’d stay, day and night, taking it in turns like shift workers to picket Savage’s flat. Savage wasn’t bothered. It was the effect it was having on his neighbours he was more worried about. Frank and Julie were on the edge already, waiting for some word about Callum. Last thing they needed were a bunch of racist paedophile hunters with misplaced ideals camping out en masse on their doorstep. They’d been through enough already. He had to deal with this.

“Tannaz, take the van back to yours, I’m going to confront them.”

Tannaz scoffed. “On your own? No way.”

“Tannaz. This is probably going to get nasty.”

“Probably? I think it will get nasty. Then you’ll need all the help you can get. But how are you going to fight over twenty men? Even with two of us, that’s far too many.”

“I have a plan.”

“Want to share it?”

“Sure. Have you seen 300?”

Tannaz rolled her eyes. “More movie references. I hope there’s a point to this. Yes, I have seen it,” she said wearily. “Guys in leather underpants. Lots of shouty acting.”

“Well, it’s not just an action flick. There’s serious historical military strategy in there. Every army officer learns it. Three hundred Spartans plus about a thousand Greeks, grossly outnumbered by nearly two hundred thousand invading Persians.”

“I was rooting for the Persians.”

Savage smiled. “Wouldn’t have expected anything less. Here’s the lesson: How to hold off a superior attacking force when you don’t have the numbers. Clever King Leonidas uses local geography against his enemy. Forces the Persian Army to fight in a bottle neck by confronting them in the narrow Thermopylae pass.”

“Where their numbers count for nothing.”

“Exactly. Nice bit of film quoting, by the way. Great line—where their numbers count for nothing.”

“So what are we going to do?” asked Tannaz. “We haven’t got a Thermopylae pass handy.”

“Nope, but we have something very similar. Come on. Time to teach St George Is Cross a lesson in fighting.”

“On one condition. I get to knock Carl Cooper out.”

“Done.”

Savage and Tannaz exited the car, walking purposefully up the road towards Savage’s flat. As soon as the rabble caught sight of Savage, they surrounded him and Tannaz, jeering and calling him a paedophile, shouting disgraceful things in his face.
